Ten major uses of petroleum oil

Nov 01, 2022

1. Fuel

There should be no suspense, and it consumes most of the oil. 72% of the oil is used to make various fuels: diesel oil and gasoline on automobiles, and fuel used by aircraft, ships and other transportation vehicles.

2. Plastic

Plastics are everywhere, toothbrushes, basins, bottles, iPads, Santa Claus... You can just count a bunch. It turns out that we live in a circle surrounded by oil - almost all plastics are petroleum products. Without special knowledge, it is difficult to connect the black stone oil with plastic products in various colors and shapes.

3. Asphalt

Also called asphalt, a product of petroleum processing, also has naturally formed asphalt. The total length of paved roads in the world is more than 17 million kilometers, and you can imagine how much asphalt is consumed!

4. Clothes

The polyester, acrylic, nylon and other fabrics we see from the clothing label are all synthetic fibers produced by petroleum. Among the fibers used in textiles, the proportion of chemical fibers is close to 3/4, and the proportion of natural fibers is only 1/4, while more than 90% of chemical fiber products rely on oil. So think about it, how much oil do you want to "wear" in your life?

5. Synthetic rubber

Synthetic rubber has high elasticity, high temperature resistance, low temperature and other properties, and is widely used in industry and agriculture, national defense, transportation and daily life. Synthetic rubber can be found everywhere in our lives, such as shoes, sports equipment, tires, wires and cables, and petroleum is the main raw material for making synthetic rubber.

6. Pharmaceutical

Pharmaceutical is indeed inextricably linked with oil. Not to mention the indirect consumables, such as the plastic used for packaging, even the medicine itself depends on oil. For example, benzene is derived from many medicines, and benzene is made from petroleum. The progress of modern medicine is also inextricably linked with petrochemical technology. In addition, petroleum products are also used in artificial limbs, artificial organs, medical X-ray films and their treatment solutions.

7. Cosmetics

Oil is also the raw material for making cosmetics, with a high content of up to 80%! Oil, paraffin, essence, dyes, etc. refined from petroleum are used to make cosmetics. The beautifully packaged cosmetics in bottles and jars turned out to be black oil before transformation. If you are interested, you can pay attention to the composition list of the cosmetics you use to see what is in it.

8. Food

Is food related to oil? It's true! How did oil come to the table? Oil is used to make fertilizers and pesticides; Petroleum products are involved in the preservation, dyeing and flavoring of many foods, as well as the chewing gum we chew... How about it? Does it taste good? If the indirect consumption of oil in food production is included, people will "eat" 551kg of oil in their life. A 500ml bottle of purified water will consume 167ml of oil after the process of water source discovery, exploitation, purification, bottling and transportation.

9. Lubricating oil and grease

Lubricating oil and grease are widely used for lubrication of various machines. Without lubrication, almost all machines cannot operate normally. Most of the components in lubricating oil and grease (butter) are base oils refined from petroleum, and 90% of the components in many lubricating oils are petroleum. The more common lubricating oil in life is the engine lubricating oil for automobile engines, commonly known as engine oil.

10. Cleaning supplies

Without oil, our life would be very dirty. Many of the cleaning products we use are petroleum products, such as detergents, shampoo, bath milk, soap, etc., which contain petroleum derivatives.
