What are the advantages of gas chromatography?

Nov 02, 2022

Gas chromatography refers to the chromatographic analysis method in which the mobile phase is gas. Gas and volatile liquid or solid samples can be separated and determined by gas chromatography.

Advantages of gas chromatography analysis:

1. Fast analysis. It usually takes only a few minutes to dozens of minutes to complete an analysis. If the chromatographic workstation is used to control the entire analysis process, the degree of automation is improved and the analysis speed is faster.

2. Good selectivity. It can separate and analyze substances with very similar properties, such as chiral substances in organic substances, cis and trans isomers, isotopes, ortho, meta and para isomers in aromatic hydrocarbons, and mixtures with very complex enantiomeric volume compositions, such as oil, polluted water samples, and natural essential oils.

3. High separation efficiency. It can simultaneously separate and determine extremely complex mixtures in a relatively short time. For example, a hollow capillary column can be used to analyze 150 components in a sample at a time.

4. High sensitivity. It can analyze~g of substances, and can detect ultrapure gases, polymer monomers and high-purity reagents in the order of magnitude. The impurities of order of magnitude are very suitable for micro and trace analysis.

5. Wide application range. It can analyze gases, volatile liquids and solids, and gases contained in solids. Generally, as long as the boiling point is below 500 ℃ and the thermal stability is good under operating conditions, gas chromatography can be used for analysis theoretically. For substances that are easy to decompose or have low volatility when heated, they can be converted into thermal stable or highly volatile derivatives by chemical derivation, which can also realize the separation and analysis of gas chromatography.
