Technical Characteristics Of UHV Technology

Aug 15, 2022

UHV technology has the characteristics of long distance, large capacity, low loss and economy. At present, the research on UHV technology mainly focuses on line parameter characteristics and transmission capacity, stability, economy, insulation and overvoltage, corona and power frequency electromagnetic fields.

Long distance: Under the condition of transmitting the same power, the UHV AC line using UHV technology can extend the farthest power transmission distance by 3 times, and transmit the same power. It can save 60% of land resources.

Large capacity: Studies have shown that the transmission power of 1,000 kV UHV AC transmission lines is about 4 to 5 times that of 500 kV lines; plus or minus 800 kV DC UHV transmission capacity is more than twice that of plus or minus 500 kV lines.

Low loss: The loss is only 25% to 40% of the 500 kV line while delivering the same power.

Economic benefits: It is estimated that the power transmission capacity of one 1150kV transmission line can replace 5 to 6 500kV lines, or three 750kV lines; it can reduce the tower material by one-third and save the wire by half. First, save 10-15% of the grid cost including the substation. The 1150 kV UHV line corridor is only about a quarter of the corridor required for a 500 kV line with the same transmission capacity, which will bring significant economic and social benefits to countries and regions with dense populations, valuable land or difficult corridors.
