Its primary purpose is non-destructive evaluation of the dielectric health and aging of solid insulation (primarily paper/pressboard) and oil.

Here's a breakdown of its key purposes:

Assessing Overall Insulation Health:

Measures the quality and integrity of the bulk insulation system (oil-impregnated paper/pressboard).

Detects increased dielectric losses within the insulation material.

Detecting Moisture Ingress:

Moisture is a major enemy of transformer insulation. Even small increases in moisture content within the cellulose (paper/pressboard) significantly increase dielectric losses.

Tan Delta is highly sensitive to moisture. A rising Tan Delta value is a strong indicator of moisture absorption by the solid insulation.

Identifying Aging/Degradation:

As paper insulation ages due to heat, oxygen, and moisture, it degrades. This degradation process produces conductive by-products (like acids, sludge, low molecular weight compounds).

These contaminants increase the resistive component (leakage current) of the current through the insulation, leading to a higher Tan Delta value.

Detecting Contamination:

Contamination of the oil (e.g., by dirt, carbon particles, excessive aging by-products) can also increase dielectric losses and thus the Tan Delta reading.

Evaluating Serviceability and Predicting Remaining Life:

By establishing trends over time (comparing results from periodic tests), engineers can assess the rate of insulation degradation.

Helps determine if the transformer is still fit for service or if mitigation (like drying) or replacement planning is needed.

Comparing Phases and Windings:

Tan Delta tests are performed phase-wise (e.g., HV-E, LV-E, HV-LV) and sometimes between windings.

Comparing results between phases (which should be similar under normal conditions) helps identify localized problems within specific parts of the insulation system.

Complementing Other Tests:

Provides information that complements results from Insulation Resistance (IR), Polarization Index (PI), Capacitance (C), Furan Analysis, Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA), and Oil Quality Tests.

How it Works (Simplified):

A very low frequency (usually 0.1 Hz or power frequency 50/60 Hz) AC test voltage is applied to the insulation (e.g., HV winding to ground).

An ideal capacitor would draw a purely capacitive current (Ic), 90 degrees ahead of the voltage.

Real insulation has imperfections, acting like a capacitor with a parallel resistor. These imperfections cause a small resistive current (Ir) component in-phase with the voltage.

Tan Delta (Tan δ) is the ratio of this resistive current (Ir) to the capacitive current (Ic): Tan δ = Ir / Ic.

Good, dry, clean insulation: Very low Ir, so Tan δ is low (e.g., < 0.5% or 0.005 at 20°C).

Degraded, moist, or contaminated insulation: Increased Ir, leading to a higher Tan δ value.

Key Advantages:

Non-Destructive: Does not stress the insulation beyond normal operating voltage levels.

Sensitive: Particularly sensitive to moisture and overall insulation degradation.

Quantitative: Provides a numerical value for trending and comparison.

Diagnostic: Helps pinpoint the type of problem (moisture vs. aging vs. contamination).

Early Warning: Can detect developing problems before they lead to catastrophic failure.

Limitations:

Does not pinpoint the exact location of a defect within the winding (like Sweep Frequency Response Analysis - SFRA might).

Results are temperature-dependent (must be corrected to a standard temperature, usually 20°C).

Interpretation requires experience and comparison to baseline/factory data and trends.
