What is the difference between transformer oil and insulation oil?

Jan 03, 2025

Transformer oil and insulation oil are two different types of oil, and their main differences are as follows:
1. Different uses: Transformer oil is mainly used for insulation and cooling of transformers, while insulating oil is used for insulation of power equipment.
2. Different composition: Transformer oil is mainly composed of mineral oil, silicone oil, or synthetic oil, with a high content of saturated hydrocarbons and good insulation performance and thermal stability. And insulating oil is mainly composed of quartz silicone oil, which contains high aromatic and olefin components and has better insulation performance.
3. Different insulation properties: Transformer oil has good insulation properties under high temperature and high voltage, and can withstand impurities such as gases and moisture generated in the transformer. Insulating oil has high insulation strength and dielectric constant, which can effectively prevent charge flow and electric shock in electrical equipment.
4. Different viscosity and fluidity: Transformer oil usually has a lower viscosity and can flow to various parts inside the transformer, playing a cooling role. And insulating oil usually has a high viscosity and is used for coating or impregnating insulating materials.
