The significance of measuring the vapor pressure of petroleum products

May 28, 2024

① Based on the vapor pressure, the vapor properties of liquid fuel can be determined.

Usually, the higher the saturated vapor pressure of engine fuel, the higher the content of lightweight components in the fuel, the stronger the vapor properties, and the easier it is to form a combustible mixture with air during combustion, making it easy to burn. The engine is easy to start and accelerate, reduce wear, and lower fuel consumption. Therefore, liquid fuels require good evaporation properties.

② Based on the vapor pressure, it can be determined whether the engine fuel has a tendency to form air resistance during use.

The higher the vapor pressure of engine fuel, the greater the possibility of forming air resistance under high or low temperature conditions. The generation of air resistance can cause insufficient or interrupted fuel supply, leading to abnormal or stopped engine operation. Therefore, a certain saturation vapor pressure is required for engine fuel, especially aviation fuel. According to China's national standards, the vapor pressure of gasoline used in vehicles should not exceed 66.7kPa in summer and 80.04kPa in winter, and aviation gasoline should be between 27.0-48.0kPa.

③ Based on vapor pressure, the degree of fuel loss during storage and transportation can be estimated.

During the storage, refueling, and transportation of fuel, there is always a loss of light fractions. Usually, the higher the vapor pressure, the lighter the fraction, the greater the loss, and the greater the risk of fire formation.
