There are four types and sources of mechanical impurities in petroleum and its products.

1. Most of the mechanical impurities in crude oil are sand, clay and tiny iron chips, rust and salts. Most of its sources are brought in during mining, and some are mixed in the process of storage and transportation. Its content is generally 1% - 2%, and individual crude oil is as high as 20%. The carbonized substances in some heavy oils are also regarded as mechanical impurities in general determination methods.

2. Most of the mechanical impurities in the refined oil are salt, rust and some clay, which are filtered and settled, but are not completely removed.

3. During the storage, transportation and use of oil, due to the incompleteness of storage and transportation conditions, dust falls into the oil, or rust is mixed into the oil due to the corrosion of the equipment. These substances are insoluble in the specified solvent and are precipitated or suspended in the oil. The metal particles added due to mechanical wear in use are also one of the reasons for the oil containing mechanical impurities.

4. When the lubricating grease contains various additives, it can be found that it contains less than 0.02% mechanical impurities, which may be the substances in the additives rather than foreign impurities.
