The voltage that indicates "good" insulating oil in a dielectric strength test is not a single number but a minimum pass/fail threshold set by international standards. The most common and important standard is ASTM D877 (Disk Electrodes) and the more rigorous ASTM D1816 (VDE Electrodes).

1. For ASTM D877 (Traditional Method with 1" Disc Electrodes)

This is a common acceptance test for new oil and for in-service oil in older equipment.

Interpretation: A test result at or above 30 kV for new oil is considered excellent and indicates the oil is clean, dry, and has good insulating properties. 2. For ASTM D1816 (Modern Method with VDE Spherical Electrodes)

This is now the preferred and more accurate method, especially for higher voltage equipment. It better simulates the conditions in a modern transformer. The gap between the electrodes is typically 1 mm or 2 mm, and the standards are correspondingly higher.

Interpretation: This test is more sensitive to moisture and particles. While 20 kV (1mm) or 40 kV (2mm) are the common minimum acceptance levels for new oil, you will often see test reports for very good oil showing values of 50 kV, 60 kV, or even higher.

It's a Pass/Fail Test: The primary purpose of this test is to determine if the oil meets a basic safety threshold. It does not, on its own, diagnose the cause of failure. Other tests like moisture content (ppm), acidity, and dissolved gas analysis (DGA) are needed for a full diagnosis.

Equipment Voltage Class: The specific acceptable limits can sometimes be dictated by the manufacturer's specifications or the voltage class of the transformer it serves.

In short: While 25-30 kV is the historical "good" benchmark, modern practices using the ASTM D1816 test mean that truly good, clean oil often tests at 50 kV or higher. Always refer to the specific test method used on the report.
