Transformer Load and No Load Loss Tester: What Your FAT Report Is Missing Without One

Jun 08, 2026

Every transformer factory acceptance test eventually lands on the same two numbers: no-load loss (iron/core loss) and load loss (copper/winding loss). Ranked technical guides from Kritester, Power Transformer Health, and major HV test suppliers all describe the same physics - hysteresis and eddy currents in the core during an open-circuit test, copper I²R heating during a short-circuit (load loss) test - yet crews still ship units with loss readings that fail IEC 60076 or IEEE C57.12.90 because the measurement chain was wrong, not the transformer.

A dedicated transformer load and no load loss tester replaces the old voltmeter-ammeter-wattmeter stack with synchronized three-phase acquisition. On the no-load side, you energize one winding at rated voltage, leave the others open, and record input power (Po), excitation current (Io%), and power factor. Distorted supply waveforms inflate core loss; any serious instrument applies waveform correction before you compare against nameplate. On the load loss side, you short the low-voltage winding, inject reduced voltage on the high side until rated current flows, then measure short-circuit impedance (Zt), impedance voltage (ekt), and copper loss (Pk) - with temperature correction to the reference value your customer contract specifies.

Distribution workshops also use these testers for transformer capacity verification. Passive capacity judgment from no-load and impedance data catches mislabeled units in the field - a 400 kVA sticker on a 315 kVA core shows up before you hang it on the pole.

Practical pitfalls we see on outage jobs: testing before oil temperature stabilizes, ignoring harmonic content on the excitation supply, and skipping vector wiring checks on three-phase units. A tester that displays voltage and current phasors catches a swapped phase before you burn an hour repeating the sequence.

Huazheng's HZKZ-100A transformer load and no load loss characteristics tester covers 30 kVA to 65 MVA, AC voltage 10–1000 V, current 0.2–100 A, with 0.1% class accuracy in the 40–70 Hz band - suitable for single-phase or three-phase power transformers. The 7-inch touchscreen stores records for USB export, which helps when your utility audit wants trending across multiple FAT lots. CE-certified production, ISO 9001, China State Grid supply history since 2008.

Match the tester to your voltage class and whether you need portable field FAT or workshop throughput before quoting - loss numbers only defend your warranty when the instrument chain is traceable.
