Precautions for Transformer Short Circuit Test

Oct 16, 2023

(1) During the test, the tested winding should be on the rated tap.

(2) Test wires, especially those used for short circuits, must have sufficient cross-sectional area (usually taken as current density of 2.5A/mm2), and should be as short as possible, with good contact at the connection.

(3) During the test, it is necessary to read the meter quickly to avoid the winding heating affecting the measurement accuracy.

(4) During the short-circuit test, the temperature measurement must be accurate. In addition, the test is generally conducted in a cold state. Transformers that have just exited the long-distance journey must wait for the winding temperature to decrease to the oil temperature before proceeding. However, the results should be converted to the rated temperature after the test.

(5) The test is required to be conducted at rated frequency and rated current. If the requirements cannot be met, the results should be converted to the rated value after the test.

(6) When using the three-phase power supply method for testing, the current and voltage values should be based on the arithmetic mean of the readings of the three-phase instrument.
