Measures to reduce the hazard of corrosive sulfur

Oct 09, 2022

With the development of transformers to large capacity and high voltage levels, the problem of corrosive sulfur in transformer oil has attracted increasing attention. Through the analysis of the causes, occurrence conditions and influencing factors of transformer faults caused by corrosive sulfur, it can be seen that the role of corrosive sulfur in insulating oil is mainly affected by the operating conditions of transformer, and the following aspects can be considered to reduce the harm of corrosive sulfur.

(1) Reduce the operating temperature and improve the heat dissipation effect of the transformer. It can be seen from the previous test results that temperature promotes the reaction between corrosive sulfur and copper. With the increase of temperature, the reaction between corrosive sulfur and copper intensifies. Therefore, in the process of transformer operation, it is beneficial to reduce the oil temperature to slow down the sulfur corrosion, especially to avoid local overheating caused by overload operation of the transformer.

(2) Reduce external motivation. The electric field promotes the reaction between corrosive sulfur and copper, and corrosive sulfur in oil will corrode copper parts during discharge. Therefore, the corrosive sulfur and its destructiveness should be paid attention to in high voltage transformers.

(3) Improve the sealing performance of transformer and prevent oxygen from entering. Oxygen can aggravate the aging of oil products and promote the reaction between corrosive sulfur and copper. Therefore, in order to prevent the occurrence of corrosive sulfur, it is necessary to strictly vacuum the transformer and ensure that the oil conservator is well sealed.
