Cable Fault Classification

Cable faults are primarily categorized based on their resistance characteristics and can be classified as low-resistance faults or high-resistance faults. High-resistance faults are further divided into leakage faults and flashover faults.

Low-Resistance Faults

A low-resistance fault occurs when the insulation of a cable is damaged, creating a conductive path between phase conductors or between a phase and ground. Such faults can be directly detected using the low-voltage pulse reflection method. These faults are generally characterized by a resistance value of less than a few hundred ohms. When the fault resistance drops to zero, it is specifically referred to as a short-circuit fault, which is a special case of low-resistance faults.

High-Resistance Leakage Faults

A high-resistance leakage fault occurs when the cable insulation medium is damaged and forms a fixed resistive channel, but the fault resistance is too high to be detected by the low-voltage pulse reflection method. Typically, the resistance value in such cases is several hundred ohms or higher. During on-site DC leakage voltage testing, the leakage current increases continuously as the applied DC voltage rises, eventually exceeding the standard allowable value for the cable. It is important to note that high-resistance leakage faults and low-resistance faults are described relative to each other, and there is no definitive boundary separating the two categories.

High-Resistance Flashover Faults

A high-resistance flashover fault occurs when the cable insulation is damaged but has not yet formed a fixed resistive channel. Within the pre-test voltage range, when the applied voltage reaches a certain threshold, the leakage current suddenly increases dramatically, far exceeding the cable's standard allowable value. This type of fault is characterized by its intermittent nature-the insulation breaks down under high voltage but may recover at lower voltages, making it distinct from leakage faults where a continuous conductive path exists.

Under normal circumstances, low resistance, open circuit fault can be directly judged by the Ohm meter or HZ-501A Power cable flashover instrument impulse testing wave.

By applying the HZ-501A flashover instrument to locate the cable fault following procedures are generally required:

(1) Analyze the cable fault characteristics and learn about the cable rated voltage and the insulation materials.

(2) Using the HZ-501A Power cable Flashover instrument's impulse method to detect the cable length, and also to calibrate the radio wave speed in the fault cable.

(3) By selecting the suitable testing method, applying the HZ-501A Power cable flashover instrument to pre-locate the cable fault.

(4) To pin point the power cable fault precisely, include the underground cable route, depth and the fault point locating.

(5) Applying the tolerances analysis method to the cable fault testing results(measuring tolerances,transferring speed tolerances, judgments tolerances,instrument tolerances).

Common problem and Solution

1. No response after start:

Check the AC 220V power supply;

Check whether the fuse is good

2. The voltage boot is not normal

Check the ground wire, high voltage ground wire is good and whether the adjust voltage knob is loosened;

3. High voltage can't be started.

Check if "Adjust Voltage" knob at zero;

4. Stop button is no response

Press the stop button for 2 to 7 seconds, or when pressing the stop button, to pull the start lever.
