Every winter, the same confusion repeats: fuel buyers and lubricant specifiers mix up pour point, cloud point, and cold filter plugging point - and the wrong choice of test can mean a tank of fuel that won't flow, or a spec that's impossible to meet. The three tests measure different stages of wax formation and flow failure, and each has its place.
Cloud point, per ASTM D2500, is the temperature at which the first visible wax crystals appear as the sample cools - the fuel or oil turns slightly hazy or cloudy. Crucially, at the cloud point the product still flows perfectly; wax crystals are just beginning to form. Cloud point is the most conservative and commonly cited cold-flow property for diesel, because it's the temperature at which wax can start plugging filters and coating cold surfaces, even though the fuel itself remains pumpable.
Pour point, per ASTM D97, goes one step further: it's the lowest temperature at which the sample flows at all. Between cloud point and pour point, the wax structure has grown from a few crystals into a lattice that can eventually trap the liquid phase and stop flow entirely. For engine oil, pour point is the boundary below which the oil won't gravity-drain into the sump pickup - though note that pour point alone doesn't guarantee pumpability, which is why MRV testing exists. For fuel, pour point indicates the temperature below which the fuel can't be poured from a drum or flow in an unheated line.
Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP), per ASTM D6371 or EN 116, sits between the two in real-world relevance for diesel. It measures the lowest temperature at which a fixed volume of fuel can pass through a fine wire mesh under vacuum in a specified time. CFPP directly predicts fuel filter plugging in a vehicle, which is why diesel standards in Europe specify CFPP limits per climate class rather than cloud or pour point. A fuel can have an excellent pour point and still fail CFPP if the wax crystals that form are large and blocky rather than small and passable - which is precisely why wax crystal modifiers exist.
The practical guidance: use cloud point to assess diesel winter grade blending, CFPP for the real-world filter performance standard (especially in Europe and Asia), and pour point when the concern is bulk flow - pipelines, storage tanks, transformer oil in cold substations, and lubricants that must drain from the sump. For lubricating oil specifications, pour point per ASTM D97 is the mandatory listed property; cloud point is rarely specified. For diesel, CFPP and cloud point dominate. Using the right test for the right application avoids both under-specification and the cost of over-treating with pour point depressants.
