How to Choose a CT PT Testing Bench: What Specs Actually Matter

Buying a CT PT testing bench isn't like picking a multimeter off the shelf. The decision ties directly to what you test, how many units you process, and which standards you're accountable to. Here's what to look past the glossy brochure.

First, define your voltage and current envelope. A bench that tops out at 1000 V output and 20 A secondary injection might cover distribution-class CTs and PTs rated up to 33 kV, but it won't touch a 132 kV transmission-class CT with a 1 A secondary and a knee point above 2000 V. For labs handling the full range of instrument transformers - from metering-class 0.2S CTs up to protection-class 5P20 units at 245 kV - look for a system that delivers at least 2500 V excitation voltage and up to 1000 A primary injection, with automated tap switching for multi-ratio transformers.

Accuracy class is the non-negotiable spec. The bench itself must be an order of magnitude better than the device under test. If you're calibrating a 0.2S metering CT, the test system needs ±0.05 percent basic accuracy on ratio and phase. A bench rated at ±0.1 percent might look good on a spec sheet, but when you're certifying revenue-grade transformers where a 0.1 percent error represents thousands of dollars in billing drift over a year, that margin isn't enough.

Automation matters more than most buyers realize. A bench that sequences ratio, polarity, excitation, winding resistance, insulation, and burden tests without operator intervention turns a 20-minute-per-unit manual process into a five-minute automated run. For a calibration lab processing 30 transformers a day, that's the difference between one shift and two. Look for digital report generation with automatic pass/fail against IEC 61869 or IEEE C57.13 limits, USB or Ethernet data export, and the ability to store raw excitation curves for trend comparison.

Portability versus fixed installation splits the market. A benchtop system weighing 30 to 50 kg suits a permanent lab setup. Field-portable CT PT analyzers in the 8 to 15 kg range cover on-site commissioning and troubleshooting, but they typically sacrifice output voltage and current range. The best approach for most service companies is one high-end bench for the lab and one portable unit for the truck.
